First Prize Winners

Xiaoyun Zhou, Jun Fang & Yuanjian He

China

We are students from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China. Our major is architectural art design. Our team members are XiaoyunZhou , YuanjianHe and JunFang. It is my great honor to win the first prize in such an interesting competition. We feel great encouragement. I hope we can gain more wonderful experience in design, and I also wish the organizer can be academically evergreen and everything goes well.

What is your design philosophy?

In my opinion, the act of design is like a way of emotional communication. No matter the object is human or object, two-way emotions are communicated through "being designed". Such "being designed" is not necessarily practice, but some may be ideology. As design practitioners, we need to build a communication mechanism from it, so that the social connection is closer, of course, this is also the responsibility.

Can you briefly explain your understanding of the topic and the source of ideas?

I strongly agree with and support the idea put forward by the organizer. Although contemporary architectural design has formed many unique styles and charms, many concerns have been placed in the scope of functional services, while concerns about human's pure feelings or emotions have been gradually diluted, which is similar to the development process of the movie on a certain level. Therefore, the design of this museum also hopes to reconstruct a new museum form through emotional analysis and translation of classic movies, so as to influence people's behavior and thinking and awaken their attention to emotional space.

When and how you were first introduced to architecture?

Before I came into contact with architecture, I thought architectural design or space design was a highly professional job that depended on science and technology. However, after the first encounter with Gaudi's architecture, I found that architecture is actually very romantic, full of emotion and strength, and it can carry a lot, not only temperature and safety in the physical sense.

What does architecture mean to you?

Architecture is of great significance to me. It not only makes me know a lot of interesting people and things, but also helps me find my life goal.

Second Prize Winners

Alicja Smoczyk, Iwona Kin & Pawel Mordeja

Poland

We are Alicja Smoczyk, Iwona Kin and Paweł Mordeja. We are second-year architecture students at
Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. We have met during our studyings and have
connected over our similar opinions and tastes.

What is your design philosophy?

In our design process we aim to mix two opposing things: the very real and the very abstract. We want to focus on real problems that we notice in our direct surroundings and that we consider underrepresented. At the same time, we try to incorporate abstract and conceptual ideas, breaking away from conventional solutions.

Can you briefly explain your understanding of the topic and the source of ideas?

From our perspective as designers, we treated this topic as a kind of sandbox that allowed us to explore how specific elements of architecture affect our emotions. We investigated different surroundings and experimented with various elements, analyzing their effect. From the perspective of a visitor, we treated it as a display, in which the museum itself is the exhibit. One of the main sources of inspiration for us was our experience regarding communication spaces in buildings, which in our opinion often appeared to be designed based only on the necessities required to move people and goods through the building, completely ignoring their impact on users’ emotions. Therefore, we decided to show how important elements such as corridors or staircases are and explore the emotions they evoke.

When and how you were first introduced to architecture?

It’s difficult to indicate the exact moment, considering that architecture is something that surrounds us all the time. It would be more accurate to say that we have gradually become more aware of it, with the breaking point of starting our college education.

What does architecture mean to you?

We believe the essence of architecture is experimenting with form and creating spaces that serve a purpose. It connects the arts, science, and sociology to reshape and improve our environment

Third Prize Winners

Tan Wenjun

China

Born in Guangzhou, China, studying in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST), Wuhan. A master candidateof architecture majoring in architectural design theory as study direction.

What is your design philosophy?

In my opinion, the purpose of design is to make people feel happy emotionally, psychologically and physically, in addition to providing basic material conditions for human living environment. Therefore, phenomenological experience is the most important aspect of my design process. On the other hand, design is also an architect's creative activity, and he needs to use various media to help architects achieve their goals. At the same time, the development of technology presents various new digital media to architects, which will change their way of thinking and expression, thus changing our living environment. Therefore, I think we architects should embrace new media and methods, and create unprecedented new experiences for human beings that are impossible to achieve through manual media in the past.

Can you briefly explain your understanding of the topic and the source of ideas?

The maintheme of the competition is Emotion Display, which uses a series of factors such as architectural space and materials to display emotions. In my opinion, two questions need to be considered: the first question is, how to translate the invisible emotions of human beings into the form of visible buildings? The second question is, how to display the complex, rich and rapidly changing emotions of human beings in a limited space?
For the first question, I was inspired by Bernard Tschumi's“Manhattan Transcript”(1980), in which Tschumi used a series of diagrams to explain the camera changes, the movement of the characters, and the development of the plot. This was a very inspiring and innovative attempt to translate the film elements which have the properties of space, color and motion into architectural elements. Therefore, I hope to use a similar methood, through the translation of the film, to show the emotional changes of the characters contained in it.
For the second question, I was inspired by a series of illusion by M.C.Escher and the film “Inception” by director Christopher Nolan, which let me experience the fragmentized and folding scenes that I haven’t perceive in before. In my opinion, the diversity of emotions is very similar to the spatial complexity, so I hope to use these interwoven Spaces to express one episode of the ”The Prestige”, the movieI selected. The prototypes of spaces - the building blocks, are first derived fromthe movie scenes, and then intersected by extracting features and Boolean operations to form ambiguous spatial experiences. By this way, when aaudience stands whereverthe viewpoint is, he can simultaneously feel the experience "gestalt" brought by the combination of spaces representing different emotions.

When and how you were first introduced to architecture?

When I was in high school, I heard from my classmates that being an architect was a very challenging profession, so I applied for this major without hesitation. I did not expect that I have struggled until now in the blink of an eye.

What does architecture mean to you?

Architecture is not so much a major as a way to look at the world. The theory of architectural design provides me with an epistemological foundation for understanding the man-made things, understanding and exploring the world. For me, it's a philosophy of making choice.
