Dr. Henry Tsang

Dr. Henry Tsang is an architect and assistant professor in the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University in Alberta, Canada. His design, teaching and research explore the intersections between health + healing, IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity & accessibility), sustainability, and culture in the built environment. As a former hospital architect with the Japanese firm Nihon Sekkei, he led the designs of many healthcare facilities around the world, including the Gunma Prefectural Cancer Centre (Japan), Tianjin International Airport Hospital (China), San Felipe Hospital (Honduras), and Gizo Hospital (Solomon Islands). Since establishing Henry Tsang Architect in 2019, he has also designed several award-winning “healing” community buildings, including the Calgary Japanese Community Centre and the Calgary Chinatown Seniors’ Centre. He is also regularly invited to speak at international conferences, including the United Nations, TED, and universities worldwide. Tsang presented “Can Architecture Heal?” at TEDx Daegu in South Korea to wide acclaim in 2015. Dr. Tsang, certified LEED, WELL and RHFAC, has practiced professionally with design firms in Montreal and Tokyo. He completed his B.Sc.Arch., M.Arch. at McGill University, and Ph.D. at the University of Tokyo as a Japan-funded Monbukagakusho Scholar. He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and recipient of numerous awards including the Robert Fung International Award of Distinction, Construction Canada's Emerging Leader Award and the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence.
